Make quilled bells to decorate your Christmas cards
ELIZABETH MOAD SAYS: While time is precious during the run-up to Christmas, it’s important to make extra-special cards for a certain few. This impressive greeting and the work that’s gone into it is sure to be appreciated by recipients! The peal of church bells is a sound we often associate with this festive time of year. Bells have long been a symbol of Christmas, commonly decorating trees, gifts and cards. Here, I’ve created them out of paper strips using the historic craft of quilling.
I’ve added a modern twist to my design by using a contemporary pink colour scheme. However, if you prefer a more traditional feel, opt for gold, red and green. It’s best to purchase a quilling tool – these are inexpensive and feature a small slit in the middle which helps to keep the paper in place. However, you can also use a cocktail stick if you want to start straight away. Despite their intricate look, these bells are actually quite easy to make once you’ve mastered the technique. Follow the handy steps on the right to learn how.
• Stick two 3mm red strips end to end. Roll into a loose closed coil and pinch into a semi-oval shape. Stick on the left of a label. Make loose closed coils from five 3mm x 10cm pink strips and pinch into small rectangles. Glue these along the base of the red shape
• Create a loose closed coil from two 3mm wide red strips glued end to end. Pinch into a pointed ellipse shape and stick below the pink rectangles. Wrap a red strip around the whole shape
• Make a tight coil from a 10cm pink strip, stopping 0.5cm from the end. Attach below the bell. Add a pinched coil made from a 10cm red strip to the bell’s top. Create loose closed coils from 30cm of green paper. Pinch to create holly shapes and attach. Repeat to make another bell
• Fix a green paper rectangle to the front of a brown blank. Mount two larger label shapes on the green panel. Embellish, then attach the quilled panel
