The origami crane is the most iconic paper folding shape and one of the easiest forms to master. All you need is a 15cm square of paper and a flat surface, and you’re ready to go. To make this sophisticated mobile, simply create a series of cranes, then thread cord through them to hang. If you’re new to origami, remember to keep your folds precise and you’ll be a pro in no time.
15cm square of paper
• Fold your square of paper horizontally and vertically in half. Unfold, then turn over
• Fold the paper diagonally in half in both directions, then unfold
• Start with a preliminary base with open end pointing down
• Fold both bottom edges in to meet the centre line, crease and unfold
• Pull the bottom point of the flap up so the sides move in. Crease flat to make an elongated diamond shape. Flip over and repeat on the other side
Step shots2
• Keep the open ends of the model pointing down and fold in both lower sides to the middle. Flip over and repeat on other side
• Fold one layer on one side over to other side. Flip over and repeat to reveal a gap at the top point
• Fold the bottom points on either side up to meet the top points
• Fold the layers back to their original position
• Take two inner folded points and pull outwards to create a head and tail. The flat front and back should become wings
• Reverse fold one angled point to shape the head. Pull the wings apart slightly and inflate the body by blowing into hole at the bottom
