Card making Christmas cards Card Making
This impressive Christmas card is more than it appears… it contains a secret message!
Craft essentials, Dovecraft Christmas Basics: 12” x 12” Paper Pack; Dies: Sentiments, Snowflakes; Wooden Elements: Christmas Trees, Frames; Sentiment Toppers: Happy Christmas; T, Ink pad: red, Velcro dots, ,
The central frame on the card’s front is actually a door – you can place whatever you like inside and only the recipient will see it. Designer Jenny Pearce has used Dovecraft’s Christmas Basics collection for this make, which includes a range of papers, dies, wooden elements and more. See what other festive projects you can create in issue 87 of PaperCrafter, on sale 25th September 2015.
• Form a 15.5cm x 21.5cm white side-fold blank. Cover the front with red tree patterned paper. Without sticking them down, place three wooden frames horizontally across the middle card, with the central one portrait and the others landscape.
• Draw around the inside of the outer two frame apertures in pencil, then remove the frames. Cut out the apertures, then stick the two outer frames in place.
• Re-position the central frame, but do not stick down. Cut around the edges of all the frames leaving a slight border, from the front layer of the card only. Round all the blank's corners.
• Cover a wooden tree with green patterned paper and wrap with white twine. Stick this to the front of the left-hand frame. Wrap a plain wooden tree with green twine and decorate with white pearls. Stick this tree to the inside back of the card so it can be seen through the aperture, slightly off-set from the green tree. Repeat for the right aperture, with the trees the opposite way round.
• Stick a strip of the red tree paper's reverse side along the bottom of the card. Die cut 'Special Christmas Wishes’ from white card and green paper. Layer them together and stick across the card, over the join. Add a red twine bow above.
• Knot a piece of green twine onto the right side of the central frame. Cut two pieces of starry paper, the same shape as the frame. Make a small hinge by folding a 1cm x 4.5cm strip of matching paper lengthways.
• Stick one side of the hinge to the left reverse side of the wooden frame and the other to the side of one of the starry pieces. Line the inside of the frame aperture with the other star piece. Decorate the front of the frame with a wooden tree decorated with pearls. Add more pearls to the corners of the frame and a green twine bow to the top.
• Stick the frame in place on the card, only glueing the back panel. Stamp a sentiment in red ink onto white card. When dry, mount onto patterned paper and white card. Stick to the middle of the frame's inside. Use Velcro dots to hold the frame closed.
• For the inside of the card, die cut multiple snowflakes from white card and stick with foam pads across the top. Decorate their centres with pearls.
